Nothing sadder than losing a friend

In April, I received a call from Karen Della Penta. Karen was the kids babysitter in Buffalo. She was Will's surrogate grandmother for two years along with her best friend Janice. They tag-teamed. Karen and Janice have always been considered a part of our family. We hated leaving Buffalo because we knew we were leaving them behind.

We've talked over the years - they've kept up with pictures of the kids on this blog. Then Karen called with the news - it was pancreatic cancer. I think she said stage 3. Stage 3 I thought - we can beat that. I know we can. We shared tears during that call, and it took all my common sense not to rush to the airport and take the next flight out.

Fast forward to last week when the family's journal seemed to becoming more dire. Today's post confirms that the end of Karen's brief battle with cancer is almost over. I pray God takes her soon so she is no longer in pain. My dear Karen will be missed.

Dallas Area Women to Star in VH1 Reality Show 'Football Wives' - KDAF

Dallas Area Women to Star in VH1 Reality Show 'Football Wives' - KDAF

More Football Wives Press!

I was recently featured in an article for Frisco Enterprise. Enjoy!

Frisco resident makes Football Wives more ‘real’

Dawn Neufeld is a mom first, a lawyer second and the wife of a football player third. Although she prioritizes her life in that order, it is her role as wife to former Dallas Cowboy and current UFL tight end Ryan Neufeld that has landed her a role on the new VH1 reality show "Football Wives."

In the show, the wives and girlfriends of football players form their own team, a group of women from the Dallas area – home to America’s Team. Dawn just finished shooting the first season of the show, which is set to air at 9:30 p.m. Sunday nights beginning Oct. 24.

“Although our lives as football wives are awesome, it’s not all glitz and glamour,” Dawn said. “In real life, my reality is I have two children, one with special needs.”

Dawn and Ryan are the parents of a 2-year-old daughter, Bryn, and a 6-year-old son, Will, who has autism. Dawn said she was unsure how Will would react to the change in routine with cameras around, but it turned out that her children were fairly comfortable with the crew.

“Anytime the cameras came around … she was just smilin’ and cheesin’ and performing,” Dawn said about Bryn.

Perhaps the ease in front of the camera comes from her mother. Dawn earned her bachelor's of arts degree in communication from UCLA and hosts a Dallas-based show about entertainment and sports called "D210 TV." It was as an undergraduate that she met Ryan, and the two maintained a long-distance relationship while she worked on a law degree and he pursued his football career before they got married.

Because football can be such a fleeting career, Dawn said she continues her work as a lawyer part-time.

“I like using my brain,” she said.

The show followed the ladies all over the Metroplex. Cameras went in the Neufeld’s Frisco home and a lot of shooting was done at The Shops at Legacy in Plano. Dawn admits that although she tried to keep her home as tidy as possible for the cameras, children have a way of revealing clutter that has been hastily stashed into the bedroom.

“I didn’t want to hide any part of my reality,” she said. “Usually it is very chaotic and messy, and I’ve got clothes and Cheerios all over my car. I watch a lot of other shows, and I see a lot of selling. There were plenty of times I had on sweat suits, no makeup and hadn’t combed my hair.”

While women will likely be attracted to the show’s glimpse into the upscale lives of the football wives, men should note that the husbands also are very involved in the process. Those football players include retired all-pro cornerback Deion Sanders, Dallas kicker David Buehler, Dallas punter Mat McBriar and Dallas guard Leonard Davis.

“A lot of the guys are still playing or recently retired,” Dawn said. “I think my husband had a great time with the experience. He was 100 percent on board and excited for the opportunity.”

Dawn said that the show actually solidified some relationships, and she thinks that there are some really touching moments that people will enjoy watching.

“I think we have a really awesome, dynamic group of women,” Dawn said. “There are things that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. There are some endearing, poignant moments that I think people will be able to relate to.”

The Neufeld family bought their home in Frisco six years ago while Ryan was playing for the Buffalo Bills. Dawn said they’re happy to call Frisco home, especially with all of the great services Frisco ISD has provided for her son.

“I’m so happy to be able to represent Frisco,” she said.

Expect to see Dawn and her family in a second season of the "Football Wives" if the show is picked up for the spring, right about the time when the women take over Dallas during the Super Bowl.

Pumpkin Patch

We made the annual trek to the Flowermound pumpkin patch yesterday with the kids. As expected, it was crazy busy and it was impossible to get the kids to cooperate for a pic together. Will was all smiles though - he even showed off his new grin minus a front bottom tooth.

Here are some shots from our adventure - and yes, Bryn is all about accessorizing with her mittens - in Texas - in 80+ degree weather.

3 out of 4 stars!!!

WOW! This is HUGE! US Weekly has given "Football Wives" 3 out of 4 stars! For some perspective, when it reviewed our predecessor "Basketball Wives," they only received half a star! We're already on a roll!

Airs Sunday 10/24

Us rating: ***

This is a brisk and flavored peek into Dallas' money-gushing world of pro football. The drama goes deep right away as the glam women, including flashy Amanda (wife of Dallas Cowboy Leonard Davis) and elegant Erin (Cowboy Mat McBriar's missus), fret about their loves' dangerous jobs. Even the staged shenanigans score, notably when two of the ladies bolt from a Bible study to hit a movie premiere. Awkward and hilarious. (VH1, 10:30 P.M.)

Another first for Will!

Baby boy lost his first tooth today - it's one in the middle on the bottom. I'll try to get a picture tomorrow if he cooperates.

And we have no idea where the tooth is - I figure he swallowed it. And I'm not looking for it!

He might be a genius....

So let me explain - over the past month or two, Will's become enamored with the United States of America. I bought him a poster-sized map of our country for his birthday, and he wanted to carry it around the house instead of admire it on the wall. This kid can tell you where the states are, and to my surprise, can even identify the states by what they look like! I can't even do that!

Date night!

Will and I went a special date this past weekend to the Frisco Mother-Son dance. We had such a great time. He LOVED the stretch Hummer limo, and was even getting his groove on at the dance. Fun times!

It's a wrap!!!!

After spending three exhausting months shooting season one of Football Wives, I am thrilled to say we wrapped Friday night! I had to give one last interview last night, and just like that, it was over. There are so many wonderful things about the show that I can't really talk about - but I promise you won't be disappointed. I saw a trailer for the show last night and it's going to rock!

Here are our official cast pics!

Kristi's married!

After a whirlwind week of shooting and traveling, Ryan and I met in San Diego last weekend for my big sister's wedding! As tired as I was, hanging out with the fam was such an incredibly fun time. And what a beautiful day! Congrats Kristi and AC!
