It's almost 8 p.m. and I can't help but think that I should be sitting here watching game 7 of the NBA championship series between the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks. No need though - the hometown team brought home its first NBA championship after the Heat collapsed in game 6.
D210 covered the exit interviews today at the AAC. Coach Carlisle answered questions for about 30 minutes. One of the most notable things he said was that this team and all the guys on it have earned lifetime bragging rights because they won a championship. He said they are set for life!
One of the things I noticed about the guys was how "in the moment" everyone seemed to be - with a lockout looming and contracts up in the air, guys like Tyson Chandler and JJ Barea couldn't stop smiling. JJ talked about heading home to Puerto Rico, where you know he'll have his own parade (JJ for Presidente!). Someone asked Tyson what he was going to do to celebrate the win - he said he was going to set up a slip 'n slide in his front yard and go for a dive. Loved that! Even a usually stoic Dirk Nowitski couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear (and I noticed today he might be still suffering a bit from that cold he played with last week - he was still coughing and sneezing).
Jason Terry came down to interviews in a terry cloth robe and truly seemed be living in the moment. He was so excited because the team had just been informed that they'd all been invited to the Espy Awards next month!
An interesting note - Mark Cuban said he was contemplating not doing championship rings - he wanted to do something different, special. Well, the overall sentiment today from Coach Carlisle to The Jet and MVP Dirk is that they want their rings!
The parade will be held on Thursday in downtown Dallas - you know we'll be there! Check out for parade route and information. It's going to be hot - so come prepared!
Congrats again to the Dallas Mavs - 2011 NBA Champions!
