What a difference a year makes! Last year we were slipping and sliding all over Dallas trying to get to various Super Bowl events in an ice storm the metroplex couldn't prepare for. Imagine my surprise when we got up to Indianapolis on Friday and it was sunny and 55! The weather was perfect!
We flew up for the NFLPA party Friday night. We would've loved to stay a bit longer because Indy was the biz-nass for Super Bowl, but we had to get back down to Texas. More on that in a minute.
We met up with one of Ryan's former teammates and his wife for dinner before the party. Getting there was a bit of a mess - my one complaint about Indy was the traffic control. We sat at a couple lights downtown for about 10 minutes each. Crazy thing is - you can see some pretty interesting stuff when you're sitting in Super Bowl traffic, like Jerry Jones and his entourage walking down the street...
We finally made it our dinner location - Shula's! Imagine our delight when Mr. Shula himself came into the restaurant!
We had a blast at the NFLPA party - always good times catching up with old friends. Jermaine Dupre deejayed, J Cole performed. It was a great night!
We were up early the next morning to head back to Texas. We had to head down to Houston to surprise another one of Ryan's former teammates for his birthday.
Back in 2007, I wrote about the devastating on-field injury suffered by Kevin Everett. On the first play of the second half, Kevin suffered a spinal injury that almost cost him his life. Last time we saw Kevin, he lay motionless in a hospital bed hooked up to machines and unable to move. Imagine the emotion when I watched him cut his own birthday cake. When I think about what could have been, watching him complete this simple task was amazing.
Nonetheless, it's always good to catch up with old friends, especially those from our football family.
We were back home on the couch in time to watch the big game! Congrats to the Giants on a phenomenal win. It was an exciting one for us - three of Ryan's NFL coaches coach for the Giants (Coughlin, Fewell and Gilbride). Super Bowl is in New Orleans next year - we'll be there!
